The Relationship Rule

A Course in Miracles says that every relationship is a holy encounter and a lesson in love.

What this means is that anytime we meet anyone, whether known or a stranger, the moment is holy as well. Because as we see them, we see ourselves.

I find this to be such a good relationship rule for living. Because when I see others as simply a reflection of myself, I am much more willing to be kind and gracious. Go figure.

As I treat him, I treat myself. And he mirrors back to me whether I’m being kind to myself. Or not. And he reflects back to me what I really want for my life right now.

As I think of them, I will think of myself. It’s the golden rule. Also known as karma. Or ‘what goes around comes around.’

It’s so important to keep this in mind, especially when people are hard to deal with. They are simply showing up as a part of us that we may not want to face. But it’s time.

The Holy Relationship. The Holy Encounter. Presence. Being in this moment, now. This is the moment we find ourselves or lose ourselves. When we look into the mirror of our relationships.

Thank goodness for the reflecting pools.

If there is a mirror, then we can use that mirror to make an adjustment. Like pushing a lock of hair back into place, we make the correction. And then thank that mirror for showing up and showing us that the hair was mussed up. We fix it and move on. Amen. Grateful.

I wonder… is there someone in your life right now who is reflecting back to you something wonderful about you? Is there anyone reflecting back that you need to brush your hair and make a course correction on how you see yourself?

The Holy Encounter is a reminder that everyone is a wholly lovable child in God’s eyes. That means everyone. It means that we are actually blessed to have the chance to see ourselves reflected in the eyes of another.

Even if they are not telling us what we want to hear right now, they are telling us that something needs to change. We may just need to realize it’s time to go in different directions. There is no blame, hatred, or condemnation. Just a different choice.

I am grateful to see myself reflected back to me so I can remember what it is I truly want in life, what I came here to do and be. Even if what the mirror is telling me is that I’m a bit mussed up at the moment. At least I can be empowered to go buy a hairbrush.

Distilled down to three simple words for today, the tonic is: The Holy Relationship.
